Why visit

  • One of Europe's highest permanently inhabited places
  • UNESCO-listed Svan tower villages
  • Views of Mount Shkhara, Georgia's highest peak
  • The dramatic Enguri valley drive to reach it

How to get there

Ushguli is about 2 hours from Mestia. The road is now mostly paved with concrete — a 4x4 isn't actually required in summer, except for one rough section past the village of Kala (currently under construction, reinforcing the rock face, with a stream crossing) shortly before Ushguli. Rivers along the route can periodically flood and close the road for a few hours; a 4x4 is a better idea for the onward track to the Shkhara glacier trailhead. Go as a day trip or stay overnight.

Best time to visit

Late June to early October, when the road is reliably open and the high meadows are green. Outside that window the road is often impassable.

Ushguli is the picture most people carry of Svaneti: stone towers stacked in a high valley at around 2,100 m, with the ice wall of Mount Shkhara behind. The four villages are UNESCO-listed, and reaching them — a scenic drive up the Enguri valley, mostly paved now with one rough section — is part of the experience.

You can come for the day from Mestia or stay overnight for the quiet after the day-trippers leave. Either way, the road and weather set the schedule, so plan with someone who watches both.

Things to do

  • Walk among the Svan towers of Chazhashi
  • Hike or drive toward the Shkhara glacier viewpoint
  • Visit the ethnographic museum
  • Photograph the villages against Shkhara
Road and safety notes
It's higher and colder than Mestia — bring warm layers even in summer. The road is mostly paved now, but conditions are still weather-dependent — rivers can flood parts of it after heavy rain, and there's one rough construction section past Kala village. A local driver who knows current conditions is still worth it over a rental car, 4x4 or not.

FAQ

Can you visit Ushguli as a day trip from Mestia?+

Yes, and most people do. It's a long day, and a local driver who knows the current road conditions makes it far more comfortable. Staying overnight rewards you with quiet mornings once the day-trippers leave.

Is the road to Ushguli paved?+

Mostly yes now — it's largely paved with concrete. One rough section remains, with ongoing construction and a stream crossing in the gorge past Kala village, shortly before Ushguli. A regular car is often fine outside that section in summer, but rivers can temporarily flood parts of the road after heavy rain.
