Ushguli is the reason many people come to Svaneti in the first place: a cluster of four villages at around 2,100 m, watched over by the glaciated wall of Mount Shkhara. The stone Svan towers here are UNESCO-listed, and the drive itself — along the Enguri valley — is half the experience.

This is a day trip from Mestia, run either as a private 4x4 (your own schedule and stops) or as a shared ride per seat when you're travelling light. Either way it's a local driver who knows the road in every season.

Because one section of the road is under construction and mountain weather changes fast, the realistic plan matters more than the brochure version — that's what we build with you.

Road and weather note
The Mestia–Ushguli road is now mostly paved with concrete; a 4x4 isn't strictly required to reach Ushguli in summer, except for one rough construction section past Kala village. We still run this tour by 4x4 for the margin it gives on the Shkhara viewpoint extension and changing conditions. After heavy rain or early snow the road can close — we confirm conditions the evening before. In poor visibility the Shkhara viewpoint is not worth the extra drive — we'll tell you honestly on the day.

What to bring

  • Layers (Ushguli is colder and higher)
  • Sturdy shoes
  • Cash in GEL for lunch
  • Sunscreen and water

FAQ

Can we do Ushguli as a self-drive day trip?+

You can, but the road is rough and slow, and many rental cars aren't insured for it. Most travelers find a local 4x4 driver less stressful and not much more expensive when shared.

How long do we spend in the village?+

Usually 2–3 hours, enough to walk the towers, have lunch and reach a viewpoint. Tell us if you want longer — private trips are flexible.

Is the Shkhara viewpoint guaranteed?+

Not on the standard 450 GEL day tour — it's a weather-permitting extension, as the itinerary above shows. If you want it guaranteed as part of a dedicated excursion, book our private Ushguli + Shkhara tour for 500 GEL.
