Every August, the Perseids meteor shower puts on one of the best night skies of the year — and Svaneti's mountains are about as dark as it gets. We drive out of Mestia after sunset to a panoramic viewpoint, away from any city light, and just look up.

Blankets, hot tea, the Milky Way, and dark silhouettes of the Caucasus ridge — about 4 hours, weather and moon phase permitting.

Highlights

  • Zero light pollution, far from Mestia's lights
  • The Milky Way and dark Caucasus silhouettes alongside the meteors
  • A good spot for night photography and timelapses

Road and weather note
A short drive out of Mestia to a panoramic viewpoint, most likely Gvaldi — nothing technical, just done at night. This only runs with a clear sky — if cloud rules out visibility, the trip is postponed or cancelled rather than run for nothing.

What to bring

  • Warm clothing (cold at night even in August)
  • Blanket or sleeping bag
  • Thermos with a hot drink
  • Snacks
  • Camera and tripod for night photography

FAQ

Do I need a telescope?+

No — Perseids are best seen with the naked eye. The more open sky you can see, the better.

When do you run this?+

During the Perseid peak each August, weather and moon phase permitting — ask us for the next planned date. Seats are limited to available vehicle capacity.
