It's a great first day in Svaneti — low commitment, high reward — and pairs well with a bigger tour later in your trip.

Highlights

  • ✓ Close-up view of a real glacier snout
  • ✓ Easy, family-friendly forest trail
  • ✓ Suspension bridge over the Mestiachala river

Itinerary

  1. 10:00
    Drive to the trailhead

Short transfer from Mestia to the start of the trail near the river.

  2. 10:45
    Trail to the glacier
    Altitude: 1,660 m

A wooden suspension bridge over the river, then a forest trail along the valley with about 250 m of gain. Watch your step on wet stones after rain.

  3. 12:00
    Chalaadi Glacier
    Altitude: 1,900 m

Reach the glacier snout. We don't go up to the ice wall itself — rocks fall from it.

  4. 14:00
    Return

Back the same way, then drive to Mestia. The whole round-trip trek takes about 3 hours on average, depending on the group's pace.

What's included

  • ✓ Transfer to the trailhead and back
  • ✓ Local driver

Not included

  • ✗ Hiking guide (optional)
  • ✗ Food and water
Road and weather note
The trailhead transfer is short and easy in summer. In early season the river crossing can be high; we check before setting out. The trail is fine in light rain but the glacier area can be cold and windy. Don't get too close to the glacier — rocks can fall from the ice edge above, and the ice itself is unstable.

What to bring

  • Comfortable walking shoes
  • Light rain jacket
  • Water and a snack
